Personal development – we’ve all heard that word being thrown around, but rarely do we take the time to sit down and determine what exactly it means. For some people, personal development might mean becoming the “best” at something – whether it is their job, fitness, or a beloved hobby. But is this definition of personal development what we should strive for?
I’ve always believed there is no right way, only another way, and this holds true for all aspects of our own individual realities. For those who believe that being “the best” will lead them to personal happiness and development – I say go for it! But for others, the meaning of this term goes much deeper and is not so easy to define.
From my perspective, personal development is not about being the best of the best. Instead, it is about discovering and rediscovering new versions of yourself every moment. While some moments may show a much more enlightened version of our Self than others, each expression of who we are… gives us a gift.
Think of it like a dance. One step forward, one step back – shift to the left, turn and step. Do you see? We dance through life by acknowledging and expressing the different versions of our true selves, which leads us to a deeper understanding of who we really are. So, why should we pursue personal development? After all, it’s hard, and it can be frustrating going deep into the process of becoming our authentic selves.
The short answer to that question is – why shouldn’t we pursue it? Personal development is not one-dimensional, and our emotional and spiritual growth is tied to all aspects of our daily life. From increasing our consciousness and intuition to enhancing employability, the confidence we receive from going through the process of personal development results in personal empowerment.
Deciding to pursue personal development, however, is one thing. The next step is to do it! There are many ways to challenge yourself and grow on a personal level. The first step is simple – set your intention to the Universe. By making our desire for personal development known, we can improve our quality of life by manifesting the exact situations we need to experience ideal growth.
